CRINGEMAXXING

The practice of deliberately increasing your tolerance for being seen trying, caring, failing or appearing uncool—so fear of public embarrassment has less power over what you do.

BE SEEN TRYING.

The term currently points in two directions

AGAINST COOL

Increasing tolerance for earnestness, participation and being visibly imperfect.

CRINGE AS CONTENT STRATEGY

Deliberately making awkward, ragebaiting or socially risky content because polished content has become easy to ignore.

MAXIMUM CRINGE

A generic ironic or pejorative label for behavior perceived as intensely embarrassing.

What is CRINGEMAXXING?

Ordinary self-expression becomes cringemaxxing when you stop waiting to feel socially invulnerable before doing the thing. You publish while still learning. You admit enthusiasm without hiding behind irony. You let other people see the attempt before the attempt can protect you with mastery. The goal is not to become maximally irritating or to force strangers into your performance. The goal is to absorb your own embarrassment instead of organising your life around avoiding it. Cringe is often the feeling of being visible before you have learned to control how you are seen.

Supposedly maxes

CRINGE TOLERANCE / PUBLIC BEGINNERHOOD / EARNESTNESS / SOCIAL COURAGE / FREEDOM FROM COOL

Adherents believe

  1. Most interesting things look embarrassing before they look accomplished.

  2. Being seen caring is not a reputational emergency.

  3. Irony can protect you from judgment and from participation.

  4. You cannot become good in public without first being visibly bad in public.

  5. The feeling of cringe is survivable.

  6. Other people’s imagined opinions should not receive permanent veto power.

  7. Your embarrassment belongs to you. Other people do not have to become props in the exercise.

You may already be CRINGEMAXXING if…

  • you post the first version before you can make it look effortless
  • you admit that you love something before checking whether it is cool
  • you let people watch you learn a skill badly
  • you send the sincere message without adding an ironic escape hatch
  • you wear the thing that feels too much like you
  • you introduce yourself instead of rehearsing the introduction for another hour
  • you can survive remembering something awkward you did in 2017

Typical practices

  • PUBLISHING THE EARLY VERSION
  • BEING A BEGINNER WHERE PEOPLE CAN SEE
  • ADMITTING ENTHUSIASM
  • DRESSING WITHOUT THE IRONIC DISCLAIMER
  • MAKING THE FIRST SOCIAL MOVE
  • LETTING A SINCERE SENTENCE STAND
  • RECOVERING WITHOUT PERFORMING A POST-MORTEM

Spotted in the wild

The term does not have one stable definition. HPRFX centers the anti-cool and visible-participation branch while documenting content-strategy and generic pejorative uses.
